Everyone should have a tribe. Be it small or large, having people that have your back no matter what is so important in creating a healthy life and happier you.

Your tribe should check off the following character traits:

  1. They always give you the support you need in any given situation. They don’t need to be asked twice – if at all – for help.
  2. They don’t allow you to wallow in your “stuff” when it seems like you can’t find your way out. They help you find a path out and into a place of processing. They will also often help you process or help find you someone who can help.
  3. They celebrate your wins and boost your self-confidence every chance they get. A win for you is a win for them because they love you and want to see the best for you, and you to be your best.
  4. They DO NOT make things about them when it really should be about you. For example, they would not even think of breaking up with you on the eve of the SATs.
  5. They WOULD NOT take responsibility for something that you accomplished. For example, if you were a musician and happened to get more successful after meeting them, they wouldn’t say your success was all due to them. It is your talent, not theirs.

Remember, you choose your tribe. People can only be a part if they are explicitly invited. If these points make you think a little harder about those around you, make sure that in addition to the acquaintances we all have in our lives, you also have a cheer squad that is always available to remind you how special you really are.

Thanks for reading and for taking this wild ride with me!
